Cross slide additions
The cross slide seems to have been home made with some parts salvaged from original cross slides. There was no stop on the right hand side adjuster and so as a result it didn’t work as it should have done. I spoke to Nick Edwards from the SOT (he owns several ornamental lathes of different makes) and with his help and his reference to page 77 in the Holtzapffel #5 book I made a brass collar (highlighted in red in the image) and connected it to the adjuster with a couple of M3 grub screws it now works as intended.
I found that the top cutting frame slide was not actually connected to the main lead screw of the cross slide. I made careful measurements and drew up a template in FreeCad and 3D printed it to ensure that I was going to drill the cross slide nut in the correct place. The plastic template confirmed that I had measured correctly and I therefore drilled the cutting frame slide and drilled and tapped the lead screw nut and fitted countersunk M4 bolts to connect the two together and to my relief the cross slide now works as it should.
Now I need to work out exactly how I am going to connect the cross slide to the lathe bed.
