New turnings

  • Small box

This small box 60mm tall 40mm in diameter was decorated on my Rose Engine lathe. The wood is unknown by me but was quite dense so it took the pattern well. The top has a white CZ inserted in the centre of the pattern. The inside of the lid is also decorated and has a blue CZ stone in the centre of the pattern. It is finished with 3 coats of lacquer. It will be going to a friend in Scotland in payment for a large piece of Oak burr that he gave me recently.

  • Boxwood Box

An ornamental box made from lightly spalted boxwood. It is 70mm tall and 70mm in diameter. The basket pattern around the outside was made with a 3mm wide cutter. The joint between the lid and base is 3 patterns down from the top. The same 18 bump rosette was used for the lid but the cutter this time was a universal cutting frame rather than the drilling frame for the side. The inside of the lid and the base also have patterns on them. The lid is adorned with a 5mm red cubic zirconia. The box is finished with 3 coats of acrylic gloss lacquer.

  • Purple heart ornamental box 2

This is my latest ornamental box again made in Purple Heart and finished with gloss lacquer. It is 6 cm high and 4.5cm in diameter. The basket pattern on the side is an experiment with some new cutters, the top three rows are 2mm wide, the next 3 rows are 3mm wide and the last 3 rows are 4mm wide. The lid has a yellow cubic zirconia stone in the centre of the ornamental pattern. there is another ornamental pattern carved on the underside of the lid.

  • Purple Heart ornamental box

This small (5cm diameter 6.5cm tall) Purple Heart box was turned and then decorated on my Rose Engine. The Basket weave pattern is 2mm wide, both the top and the underside of the lid are decorated with different patterns. A CZ stone is in the centre of the top and it is finished with 2 coats of spray lacquer.

  • Pocket watch and stand

This pocket watch is made from a piece of Cocobolo and the stand from Oak. The pocket watch is 5.5cm in diameter and is fitted with a quartz movement. It has an imitation winder in brass that I turned on my metal lathe. The rear of the watch case has a pattern engraved with my rose engine and the pattern is then filled with gold embellishing wax. The Oak stand was made in 3 pieces and stands 16cm tall, it has two brass pillars again turned on my metal lathe. Finished in satin lacquer and then micro-crystalline wax.

  • Lidded Chalice

This lidded chalice is 13cm tall and 7cm in diameter and is made from brown Ivory (wood not elephant). Turned on my conventional lathe and then the fluting was done on my rose engine. The underneath of the lid had a small pattern engraved by the rose engine and it was then filled with gold embellishing wax. It is finished in matt acrylic lacquer.

  • African Blackwood box-2

This African Blackwood box is 5.5cm tall and 5.5cm in diameter. It was turned on my normal lathe and then enhanced on my Rose Engine lathe. To enhance it a bit more I added a white paste stone to the centre of the lid and a smaller pale blue one one to the inside of the lid. I entered this into the woodturning section of the recent Heckington Show where it was awarded second place.

  • African Blackwood box

This small African Blackwood box is 5.5cm tall and 5.5cm in diameter. It was turned on my normal lathe and then enhanced on my Rose Engine lathe. To enhance it a bit more I added a red paste stone to the centre of the lid and a smaller one to the inside of the lid. To turn the basket wave on the outside I had to modify my usual cutter as it would have hit the chuck before it completed the pattern on the side of the lid so that cutter was modified on my metal lathe.

  • Small ornamental box

This little box is 60mm in diameter and 60mm tall. The bottom is a piece of Olive wood that has been ornamental turned to a basket pattern with a 16 bump rubber on my Rose Engine using a router cutter and drilling frame. The lid is a piece of Blackwood embellished with an 18 bump rubber and the UCF on my Rose Engine lathe. The finial is separately turned again in Blackwood. It is finished with satin lacquer and then waxed with micro-crystalline wax.

  • Spalted Beech ornamental dish

This shallow dish is 13cm in diameter and made from a piece of spalted Beech. Turned round and the back was turned on a conventional lathe. I then cut the outside using a 16 bump rosette on my Rose Engine and my new cutting frame. The cutting frame was then re positioned and the same rosette was used to cut the interior, going progressively deeper towards the centre to form the dish. The spalting seems to hide the ornamentation inside the dish so I may try gilding it with artificial gold leaf to see if it shows any better.
